Science
Aims
The national curriculum for science aims to ensure that all pupils:
-develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics
-develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
-are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future
Purpose of Study
A high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics. Science has changed our lives and is vital to the world’s future prosperity, and all pupils should be taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. Through building up a body of key foundational knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about natural phenomena. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse causes.
Science at Warwick Bridge School
Early Years - Children in EY look at 'Understanding the World' to explore the many scientific facets they will look at as they move through school. They will draw pictures of animals and plants and use the experiences of Forest Friday to help them in their scientific understanding.
Year 1 - In Science, children will be learning about ‘Animals including Humans’; ‘Plants’; ‘Everyday Materials’; ‘The Seasons and Seasonal change’ and ‘Forces and Movement’. The focus will change each term, but children will be exploring these areas continually throughout the year, for example, they will monitor the plants that grow in the local area all year.
Year 2 – During Science we will be covering the following topics:
Using Everyday Materials
Sound and Hearing
Living Things and their Habitats
Plants
Animals Including Humans
Through these topics we will be developing our observation skills, sorting skills and enquiry skills as well as learning about famous scientists.
Year 3 - In Year 3 the children will explore a variety of scientific areas. These include:
Magnets and Springs
Light – reflections and shadows
Plants – life cycles of flowers, how water is transported in plants
Animals, including humans – nutrition, skeletons and muscles
Rocks – fossils and soils
Through these topic areas the children will have the opportunity to research famous scientists, plan and carry out experiments, generate and analyse data and ask and answer questions.
Year 4 - In Year 4 the children will explore the following areas:
All Living Things - classification keys, human impact on environments.
Animals including humans - digestive system, teeth, food chains.
Electricity - common appliances, simple circuits, series, switches, conductors & insulators.
States of matter - solid, liquids, gases, evaporation and condensation.
Sound - vibration, pitch and volume.
Through these topic areas the children will have the opportunity to research famous scientists, plan and carry out experiments, generate and analyse data and ask and answer questions.
Year 5 - In Science, Year 5 learn about:
All living things – life cycles and reproduction.
Animals including humans – human development from birth to old age.
Properties and changes of materials – hardness, solubility, transparency, conductivity, response to magnets.
Forces – gravity, air resistance, water resistance and friction, forces and motion.
Earth and Space –the Solar System.
Year 6 - In Year 6 the children will explore the following areas:
All living Things - Interdependence and Adaptation, leading into Evolution and Inheritance.
Light and How we See Things.
Electrical Circuits.
Animals including Humans - Healthy Living and the Circulatory System.
They will also be revising many of the scientific skills and knowledge gained over their primary school years in preparation of their transition to KS3, becoming more independent in planning their own experiments and learning how science is applied in our wider world.
For more information please contact the subject co-ordinator, Mrs Kelly. Alternatively please look at your child's class page and the class timetable.
As some classes at Warwick Bridge School are made up of mixed year groups, your child may be looking at some areas from different years. Each class teacher will be able to explain how this works.
